Inmate Text App

If you have a friend or family member currently in prison, the best method to stay in touch is to use an inmate messaging app. These apps are specifically subtext designed to comply with prison regulations and allow family members and friends to send and receive messages images, photos, eCards video calls, as well as money into their trust account at the prison. In addition to these messaging apps, there are a number of federal inmate applications that provide additional services like video visits and phone calls.

The JPay app, for example allows family and friends to send money into the trust account of an inmate, as well as images, emails as well as eCards, video grams and more. It also lets them design personalized postcards with personal photos. It's a safer, more secure alternative to regular mail.

Another popular app for texting prisoners is GettingOut. It allows "simple, efficient communication" between inmates with their loved family members. The application is available at select correctional facilities and allows inmates to upload images and text messages to family and friends via their tablets. Inmates pay $0.25 per message and their loved ones pay costs for accessing the data (but there are no explicit images). The GettingOut app allows users to upload a photo to Facebook or Foursquare or check-in on Foursquare and even add the option of a YouTube video.
